Nokia doubles staff in Jucu, Cluj:

Nokia's plant in Jucu, Cluj County, now has 700 employees - double the initial number of staff, whilst recruitments continue. "Production started with 350 employees and now we have around 700. We estimate their number will reach 1,000-1,200 by the end of the year, and 3,500 by the end of 2009," John Guerry (photo), manager of the plant, told ZF Transilvania and added that the company wanted to add new people to the team. "We are not hiring just production-related personnel, but also professionals from fields such as finance, operational management, industrial engineering, quality assurance, and planning.

The number of employees is rising on a daily basis," explained Guerry. Alongside Romanians, the Jucu plant also employs Indians, Americans and Finns, but most of the employees come from communities nearby the plant - Jucu, Dej, Gherla and Cluj-Napoca. The Finnish officials did not wish to comment on the salary level, but said that employees earn "competitive wages for the local labour market." Production at the plant started in mid-February, whilst company officials announced three months later that they had manufactured one million phones. "Production started with the Nokia 1200 model and several other new products have been launched since. We don't usually disclose information on certain models produced in our plants, but I can tell you that they are easy-to-assemble products, dedicated to entry-level markets. The more complex models are being introduced gradually," added the plant's manager.
So far, Nokia's investment in Jucu amounts to 60 million euros.
